Civil activist and poet, Maya Angelou becomes the first black woman to appear on a coin.

Memoirist, Civil activist and poet, Maya Angelou becomes the first black woman to appear on a US quarter, a 25 cent piece.

This was unveiled by the US Mint on Monday, 10th January, 2022.

According to a pressure statement released by the US Mint, it has begun shipping the US quarter with Angelou on it.
"It is my honor to present our nation’s first circulating coins dedicated to celebrating American women and their contributions to American history,”

“Each 2022 quarter is designed to reflect the breadth and depth of accomplishments being celebrated throughout this historic coin program. Maya Angelou, featured on the reverse of this first coin in the series, used words to inspire and uplift.”

Angelou through the American Women Quarters Program which was signed into law in January 2021, will be the first to be commemorated.

The Program therefore urged the US Mint to allocate quarters to women who have made remarkable contributions to the country.

For the last 90 years, the American quarter bore Americas first president, George Washington on one side and an eagle on the other, while the new ones bear Maya on one side and Washington on the other side.
